Top 5 summer activities in Geilo

Geilo is situated along the Bergen Line halfway between Oslo and Bergen and is a great base for touring the surrounding area all-year-round. We talked with Beata Chrominska at the Øen Tourist Centre and she gave is the following suggestions for five things to see and do when staying in Geilo this summer.

1. Mountain trekking
Experience the amazing nature in Hallingskarvet and Hardangervidda national parks. Signposted trails invite everyone to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Here you can choose between deep valleys and high mountains, as well as a colourful flora and wide expanses. Geilo is easily accessible by road or rail and is the ideal starting point for trekking in the mountains.

2. Cycling
Geilo is a paradise for trail bikes and downhill cycling in the summer and is also suitable for fat bikes in the winter.

Take a gentle cycle ride along prepared tracks following rivers and fjord or experience an adrenalin rush on an off-road trail bike through forest trails downhill.

3. Horse riding
Explore the mountains on horseback. A short horse ride from Geilo takes you to the Hallingskarvet National Park. Experienced instructors provide good training before the tour and we have horses for both learners and the more experienced riders.

4. Rafting and other water sports
Rafting is an awesome experience and suitable for anyone who doesn’t mind water. Geilo has several companies offering rafting for adventurous thrill-seekers and young families looking for a bit of excitement. There are also other types of water sports available such as kayaking and SUPs (stand up paddleboards or duckies).
